It was really neat to see all the different types of mommas who showed up. Everyone seems to have an image of breastfeeding or natural parenting advocates as either extreme hippies or super conservatives. This is, in fact, not true! Natural parents come in all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, ethnicities, and incomes.
At the end of the event all the mothers went around the room and told what they enjoy most about breastfeeding. It was nice to see all the different responses and support for one another. We even had a super milk momma who is breastfeeding three kids right now! One of which is five!
I honestly never even considered breastfeeding a toddler or older child, but it was really neat to hear the two toddlers mothers perspectives on the subject. One mother was getting ready to wean her three year old. He even said "I turn three then no more milkies!". He was so cute and she made a great point. I have a toddler and a four year old and know it is SOOOO difficult to have quiet time with them. However, as this mother pointed out, when everything gets crazy and she wants some time to just "chill' she can have her son come over and nurse for a little while. It is their "quiet" time together.
Many of you know that I have had less than ideal breastfeeding experiences, but this is why I think it is so important to be educated and prepared before you have your baby. If you do not have a good support system it can be a very tough journey! So I strongly urge everyone to check out the facts (BREAST IS BEST) and find a good support group. You can do it! Sometimes you just need a little extra push.
Happy Breastfeeding Awareness Month to all you mothers out there breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. You are doing an awesome thing for your babies (and yourself)!
Did you know Everything Birth also has breastfeeding supplies? Check them out here!
