There is nothing more powerful in our lives than memories, but what is it that triggers these memories for us? Is it the sight of something special, a photograph perhaps? Sight can bring back memories but there is something else that can open the memory flood gates even faster- scent. There is nothing that can bring memories and forgotten moments flooding back into my mind like a certain, specific, and undeniable scent. The smell of yesterday is something we rarely forget; therefore, scent can carry us to forgotten places with swiftness unmatched by any sense. So what are these special scents in our lives? Here are a list of those “special” scents and the memories those scents hold.
Whether it is the smell of that special someone’s cologne or the smell of a certain meal he cooked for you, many smells bring you back to those special moments with your significant other. For me, love is a mix of Patchouli, garlic, and cold mountain air. Each brings back a different memory with my husband. My hubby has always LOVED the smell of Patchouli; therefore, it is the mainstay in most of his cologne choices. If I smell Patchouli it always makes me think of him. Garlic is another big one. My husband loves to cook and loves to use lots and lots of garlic. Nothing transports me back to those first meals together like the strong smell of garlic. Before my husband and I got married, we took a trip to Red River, New Mexico with my family. I can distinctly remember the smell of the cold mountain air as we were riding the ski lift. So whether I catch a waft of Patchouli, smell some fresh garlic bread, or step outside and smell the clean smell of a cool breeze, all these smells can take me back to the same place.
For many people the smell of baby lotion or baby powder can bring back fond memories of their new bundle of joy. The smells that bring me back to those early days caring for my newborn babies are tea tree oil and Shea Butter. I have always loved the smell of a particular baby lotion that uses Shea Butter. I used it on all three of my babies and anytime I smell that particular scent it makes me think of my children as tiny babies. Tea Tree oil is another big one. Whether using it to treat minor boo boos or diaper rash, I love Tea Tree oil. Many of our diaper balms and lotions contain it and the smell is one that is undeniable.
Smell is so unique because it can mean something different to every person. The smell of a wicker basket reminds me of the days spend with my Uncle at his home. My Aunt collected baskets and they had a very distinct wicker smell. Or the smell of Lavender and Mint remind me of a special “Mother-Daughter” spa day. Have you ever smelled a Persimmon? It is an apricot-like fruit and it’s scent can take me back to a number of childhood memories. The smell of old parchment can bring me back to my days in school study for my final exams all night long in the library.
It may seem crazy, but smell is a very important part of our lives. That is why
Seventh Generation came out with a line of naturally scented dish soaps. I know, I know, it is dish soap. However, dish soap can be more than dish soap if you choose the right product and right scent. Seventh Generation has made a dish soap that goes way beyond the typical artificial lemon and orange scents commonly found. I recently used the Lavender Floral Mint and was completely blown back at how amazing it smelled. That smell was one straight out of a spa! It literally had me fooled; if I closed my eyes long enough I could have sworn I would awake to a mani and pedi.
To celebrate their latest scents, Seventh Generation is celebrating with the Nature Makes Perfect Scents sweepstakes - you can enter to win a trip for two to one of the regions where lemons, clementines and lavender grow, including France and Italy. So if you don’t have any memories triggered by the yummy lavender or lemon scent, make some new ones in France or Italy courtesy of Seventh Generation.
