The Great Glitter Explosion

My daughter loves to make arts and crafts projects and since she is a diva at heart some of her favorite crafts include glitter and lots of it. Every picture, painting, photo, or drawing is topped off with an excessive amount of glue and various colors of glitter. My daughter will gush over her new sparkly masterpiece and then run off to another project leaving me behind to a nice big sparkly mess. Gooey glitter explosions are tons of fun until it is time to clean. I don't let the mess stop us from having fun and neither should you. Messy fun is the best fun and Clorox is acknowledging that messes can be fun.

Clorox recently came out with a site called Recipes for Fun which feature tons of fun and slightly messy projects that your kids are guaranteed to enjoy. Check out the site for lots of fun ideas for your kiddos.

You can also enter to win their Ultimate Mess Party Sweepstakes. You could win $10,000 towards the ultimate mess party thrown for your children. Imagine the giant mess your child could make with $10,000!!! Good news is you can use Clorox Clean-Up to clean your mess afterwards.

We have so many recipes for messy fun at our house I could go on for days. However, with spring coming in strong and nice blustery winds outside, I decided to talk about one of our favorite (and messy) projects, Kite making!

My daughter loves flying kites and even when we buy nice new kites they always end up in trees or blown to bits, so we started making our own kites. We use recycled magazines, constructions paper, coloring pages, newspapers, and various other tidbits lying around the house to make a flying masterpiece. We of course then top off the design with a little glue and  glitter. If you are in the mood to give kite making a go here is our recipe for a preschooler approved kite.

First, find a large piece of newspaper, grocery sack, or upcycled paper item of any sort. You will then need a twig or stick that is approximately 6 inches long and then two sticks that are 12 inches in length. Then some long string and an assortment of crayons, markers, glue, and glitter.

We then take our paper and cut it into a wide triangle. It doesn't have to be perfect. These are typically one-time use items. Then take the two 12 inch sticks and tape them to the kite. Tape the 12 inch long sticks in an x shape in the center of the triangle.

Use a hole punch and punch three holes in the triangle at each corner. Now cut three pieces of string and tie them into each hole. Then tie all three peices of string together in a knot in the center of your kite. Now tie a long piece of string to the center knot you just created and run it down and tie it to the smaller 6 inch twig. Viola, you have a functioning kite.

Decorate the kite to your specifications, in our case it is glitter and more glitter. Then take it outside and give it a go.

It may be messy, but the smiles you will receive in return are well worth the extra cleaning.

What messy projects do your little munchkins enjoy??
