Cloth Diapering Overnight Solutions

I have had many people tell me that they use cloth during the day, but still use disposables at night. So  can cloth diapering be done at night successfully? YES! Absorbency is key for those long nights! There are a couple different solutions that I have found helpful in my overnight diapering quests. So here they are!

Ellie with a Prefold combo under a Grovia Shell
  1. The double stuff- This is my personal favorite for my toddler. He sleeps about 12 hours straight and is a heavy wetter. He is also a tummy sleeper. I take my Happy Heiny's pocket diapers (you can use any pocket) and lay once insert in normally. Then I take a second insert and fold it into thirds width wise. This gives you a little "insert square" I take the trifolded insert and place it right in his wet zone. I have yet to have a leak doing this. It will be a bit bulky in the front though. (For a girl you would place the "insert square" in the middle)
  2. Insert Square- If you have any inserts that are not Microfiber (such as a gdiaper or Flip insert) you can fold them in thirds width wise to make a nice little insert square. Put this on top of you favorite diaper system in the wet zone. So if you use prefolds and covers- Put a prefold in the cover then lay the trifolded insert in the wet zone. Or you can put this in a fitted diaper, in a pocket, AIO, you name it. Once you have folded that insert into thirds you have a SUPER absorbent layer!
  3. Duo Fitteds- I also know a lot of mommas who will use two fitteds with a cover for overnight. This would be a bulky solution, but should contain well!
  4. Prefold combo- I use this frequently on my littlest. I use a hemp prefold in the bottom of the cover, then I lay a trifolded cotton prefold on top of it. This seems to do the trick for a littler one.
  5. Prefold combo for the heavy wetter- I will lay a hemp prefold in the bottom of the cover, then take a trifolded prefold and fold it in half width-wise. This will give you a doubled prefold. Then just lay  that in the wet zone (front for boys- middle for girls)
  6. Boosters- Using any diaper with an added couple boosters also works well. I have used numerous pocket diapers with an insert and two extra boosters with success.
  7. You pick the combo!- You can pick any combination from your stash. You will just want to use two or three different absorbency layers.
The key is getting enough absorbency! For overnights you will probably not have the trimmest diaper; however, it should hold in the floods!

On another note, I used disposables at night for months because I was worried about leaks. My son then started peeing so much he would leak from his disposables EVERY SINGLE night. I was washing so many sheets it was insane. So I started trying some different cloth combos and couldn't be happier! No wet sheets anymore.

  1. Thanks for the post, I just double stuffed my BG 4.0 with 2 of the MF inserts. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner.

  2. Apparently my son is the pee monster. My BG4.0's double stuffed cannot contain him for a mere 8 hours. I am tired of wet angry baby in the middle of the night. Poor little guy.

  3. Have you tried the "insert square" that I talk about in this post? That will give you the most absorbency for a pocket.
